Yes, we made it!!! I am happy and sad to say that I have come to the end of this training. Happy-because this is the last 'thing' to do. Sad - because I have definitely enjoyed blogging and learning these 23 things and it is just like saying goodbye to a good friend. I honestly say that I still have lot more to learn and will keep learning web 2.0 and apply and share them to improve our customer services in libraries. I enjoyed 'flicker' and sharing photos and pictures. The downside about this learning is that I didn't have enough time to do it but in the end.. it was worth it and was a blessing being able to touch the finish line. I am very thankful to all my colleagues who have been very encouraging to me especially when we were discussing about this web 2.0 training. I have enjoyed reading my other colleagues blogs and learnt from them as well. Thank you all folks. Adios Amigos... Kia Ora....

E-Books

I have gone to visit Project Gutenberg. Explored a few links on the site: eg. top 100 ebooks and authors yesterday, top 100 ebooks last 30 days, top recent ebooks last 7 days, etc. I have browsed at few titles such as Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens (I'm a fan of Charles Dickens, you see :), Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, The beginner's American History by D. H. Montgomery, Ang Sintang Dalisay ni Julieta at Romeo by G. D. Roke (Tagalog Version) and Florante at Laura (Florante and Laura) by Francisco Balagtas also in a tagalog language. I was glad to see tagalog ebooks and remembered that some of these were used during my highschool days in subject Filipino Literature. There are different categories on how you will be able to read/download Project Gutenberg ebooks. This is through Audio book computer-generated, audio book human-read, data, music recorded, other recordings, pictures moving, and so on. The feature "My Bookmarks" is useful as I need to go back to continue reading "American History" when I need to.

I think ebooks or online reading is great for research work. I still prefer reading my book sitting on my warm bed and feeling cozy rather than sitting on a chair reading online (:<>

Thus, I enjoyed reading Project Gutenberg ebook of Inaugural Presidential Address by new President Barack Obama and I am very impressed with his inspirational words to America: "Our challenges may be new, the instruments with which we meet them may be new, but those values upon which our success depends, honesty, and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism, these things are old, these things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history"....

Podcasting

Whew...I can see the end is near :) Yes, I'm now getting close to finish this training (would be a blessing!). Anyway, I've been looking at 'Podcasts' and share a bit of comment about it. Podcast claimed as the "Word of the Year for 2005" by Oxford American Dictionary. Hence, Oxford Dictionary says that podcast is - "a digital recording of radio broadcast or similar program, made available on the internet for downloading to personal audio player. It provides audio content for people to download and enable them to access the content through listening, whenever and wherever they want to. I have looked at Podcast.com and got into book review called 'Book Review Noise' and listened to 'The bone Collector' and 'Twisted' book reviews (authored by Jeffery Deaver). Wow....very interesting! Didn't have to read the reviews but listen to it online. I think it is a useful site in a library setting.

Once a library student posted a comment on a forums about podcast- how this tool works in their company. She said that: "podcasting has been useful in the workplace for staff who are unable to attend special events or meetings, and to help staff in regional offices feel more included in events held at head office. They also received podcasts for training sessions they might missed off....(great idea). She added that, these are presented on 'Novell Delivered Applications'. Anyway... I found a useful site 'Radio New Zealand RSS & Podcasts', it's worth checking out! I have however added this link: http://books.podcast.com to my blog.

YouTube

Hope you enjoy the above 'Library Dominos' :) I have also watched YouTube of Conan Library- it is hilarious (he-he-he). Well, it's sort of a funny library scenario that staff can laugh about.

Anyway, I wonder if people have much time to watch YouTube. Boy....it surely takes time to view these videos. One question in mind: How can the site be useful in the libraries? I guess, YouTube is a good space to advertise library programmes, activities, news, and so on. And of course, we can share a video about our own library, too.

Web 2.0 Tools

I have had a look at Web 2.0 Award Winners. I've explored 'Video' for category - 'Metacafe.' They're very interesting! Although I've spent hours just watching videos....boy, it takes time to watch them. I've looked at 'Book' category - Library Thing (as Honorable Mention) and Lulu (as 1st place).

To this end, I have chosen 'Lulu', it is a great site, such a great tool to use in a library situation. With its features: top 100 sellers, library news, reviews or buying or selling books through prints and downloading materials (with small fees specified),and make your own photobook. Creating your own photobook would be cool. Sure, it'll be a great site to make personalised keepsake photobook. The site would be useful in our libraries: likeminded librarians can join forums, send newsletters, post comments, share reviews about books, etc. It is a great site for collaboration.

Zoho Writer!

Zoho writer sounds really cool. It sounds great with its multiple applications. It is easy access from any computer. What a great Word Processor on the web. There are heaps of formatting options to choose on like color your words, smiley, and much more. As you can see now that I am doing a test document with 'this' background colour. This is.....fun.

Social Networking or the Thing 17

I think the sites are best for teenagers and young people. I quickly looked around Bebo and I think it's a great site to be in contact with friends and family especially those who reside in overseas. I haven't sign up on Bebo yet, I will... (later :)) I actually have signed up on Myspace and I'm sure will enjoy connecting with family overseas. Facebook looks interesting! Indeed, they are wonderful sites. I have heard about Bebo the first time at our library. It is very popular amongst teenagers. Surely it is enjoyable to exchange personal interests, ideas, opinions, comments, share photos online...and this is all about 'people need people', as the old phrase says: "No man is an island". People are in need to be in contact with others. These sites are rich in social interactivity and truly is a great 'social' services to youngsters. Well, good to see other staff from our libraries who have signed up on Facebook's Hennepin County Library. Nice to see your photos, folks :)

Ever since the advent of computers, new technology has been upgrading and will continue to be upgraded. This fast pace of changing technology will never stop and it is ongoing. Library speaking, libraries have changed from the more traditional books only (paper forms)into a more sophisticated virtual, electronic libraries (i.e. e-books). This is where library 2.0 has played its contribution as a significant tool to libraries of tomorrow. Library 2.0 is about new advanced concepts to improve the future libraries; to meet the users in their space and develop its services. It embraces constant change to meet its users' needs. Not only that Library 2.0 revolves around the use of new technology, its constant advancement also signifies both physical and mindset changes for its users. These techno changes are the 'enabler' that makes our spaces and services more 'user-centric and inviting.' "Abram, S" has defined four essential elements of Library 2.0 *It is user-centered; *It provides a multi-media experience; *It is socially rich; and *It is communally innovative. The 'Not-so-technical with Technorati' Part

When looking up a keyword search on 'Learning 2.0,' I found out that the hits/results are just slightly different in quantity in searches blog posts, tags, and the blog directory. Keyword 'learning' didn't have to be on subject learning 2.0 results only but it could be 'learning knowledge' or 'learning from mistakes'...and so on. Here, you need to click on the right info you're looking for. When exploring 'popular blog,' the site seems to be more organised with top 100 blogs (by fans), top videos, top music, today's photos, etc. The site is quite interesting and enables you to browse around, like for example, if you want to know the top movies..it will provide you ideas and info about certain movies :) Ads by google is good but it takes time to download high profile personalities so I didn't bother...

Tagging and Technorati

Whew, during the holiday seasons, I thought I would be able to catch up with this course....there's always things to do and to be done in this busy life of ours :) However, I actually enjoy this e-learning. I really appreciate that the Council is giving us this great opportunity to learn and be advanced in this wonderful world of the internet and the world wide web. This time Im doing Tagging and Technorati. Tagging - I explored the site and found myself confused actually. Tagging is 'informal and allows users to create connections between data in an open and unstructured ways'. Yeah, there is so much information to take on. We are overload with information! Historically, the saying goes that 'more information has always been a good thing.' However, one problem is the inability of a human mind that cannot keep up with the ability to collect and process that information. Yes, the site is useful for research assistance and you will retrieve other people's personal opinion, interest and ideas. I am also delighted that there are some very interesting information on the site. Found a site called virtual cookbook 'http://delicious.com/simplyrecipes. It has ton of great recipes. I found a favourite recipe: Gevulde Koeken - Dutch almond pastries. Haven't sign up on del.icio.us yet but I will later.

Technorati - This is quite a good way of getting news about politics, business, economy, latest technology, photos, videos, celebrity gossips :) , etc... I did a keyword search library and found links on videos such as 'No Cookies in the library - Classic Sesame Street' It is very fascinating but requires time to explore.

Technology

The wonderful world of high technology is indeed fascinating and interesting. I enjoy sharing photos online to my family and friends around the world. I am not keen on email but it is very useful when you need quick response from the other person. I still enjoy longhand writing and sending cards to friends and family through snail mail ( I'm old fashion you see :) ). I use google a lot. I like to navigate and get news about prominent politicians from the country where I come from. That bad thing about it, sometimes I google about news or gossips about popular movie stars of my country of origin :). Yeah...that is my weakness. My daughter is so thrilled about her new digital camera. My son just received a gift of MP3 player but his big sister is always....using it. Anyway, my husband just bought himself a bluetooth ear phone. He said he does not have to hold his cellphone while talking and can just drive safely. Here it is.....

Wikipedia

I find Wiki as a wonderful website. It is easy and quick to navigate. It allows librarians to collaborate and share knowledge within that online community. It is interesting to know that libraries can benefit with Wiki's applications such as subject guides, book reviews, conferences, etc. Book reviews is interesting. Here bookreaders share reviews about their favourite books. A good way to recommend books to customers in our libraries through their reviews.

The downside of Wiki is that it maybe not the best reference in their research work. I was told by a lecturer in a course that while Wiki is a useful starting point, it is however not an ideal source of information especially when there are other better sources. But I for one am guilty because I tend to use Wiki a lot.

This is a clever idea to create my own search tool in Rollyo. Upon exploring 'Rare Book Library Search,' I found some info on online resources about my old favourite books: 'The Pilgrim's Progress' and 'Susanna Wesley': the complete writings. It was quick and easy to find them. In fact, this literary search would also be beneficial to children doing their research work to enable them to search effectively using these online resources.

Hi, I'm Ange. I work where there are heaps of books - some books are old, some are new, some are grubby too... sometimes. However, I like shelving them. This is my favourite job :) I have a husband. I married one. The odd thing is he is quite tall and I'm quite short :) he-he. Don't mind about being little and short. I guess that's the way it is. As I have said I love shelving at work but not at home. If you ever come and see my husband's office at home, you'll be very surprised the amount of books he has. Some books are shelved but some lying on the floor, some are on his desk by the computers, some are sitting on the chairs, lying on the couch, on coffee table, by his bedside, on the TV, everywhere. The funny thing about it is that he keeps getting books on trade me :( Everytime I see a parcel in the mailbox and shaped like a book; I knew it is an addition to his collection. You wonder what sort of books they are? Most likely they are christian books or religious or even health books. As I have said earlier it is indeed my job to do shelving at work but not at home. I have made up my mind. No, I won't do shelving at home. Or maybe if I ever have a spare time, I might shelve his books. Who knows when?.
